THE WHITE HOUSE

The White House is the home and working office of the President of the United States. The first President to occupy the White House was John Adams in November 1800. The White House has a unique and fascinating history. It survived a fire at the hands of the British in 1814 (during the war of 1812) and another fire in the West Wing in 1929, while Herbert Hoover was President. UNITED STATES SENATE

The United States Senate is part of the legislative branch of the government. Each member of the Senate serves (6) year terms. There are (100) Senators (2) from each of the fifty United States. The Constitution assigns the Senate and House have equal responsibility for declaring war, maintaining the armed forces, assessing taxes, borrowing money, minting currency, regulating commerce, and making all laws necessary for the operation of the government. US HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The United States House of Representative is part of the legislative branch of the government. Each member of the House of Representatives are called Congress Man or Congress Women. Each member is elected to (2) year terms. The house is where the laws of the nation are created. Each House member Represents citizens from districts across the United States. The Constitution assigns the Senate and House have equal responsibility for declaring war, maintaining the armed forces, assessing taxes, borrowing money, minting currency, regulating commerce, and making all laws necessary for the operation of the government. The United States Department of State is in the capital of the United States, Washington, D.C., and is near the White House. It is located between 23rd and 21st Streets, NW, south of the Foggy Bottom metro stop. The U.S. Department of Labor was created by Congress in 1913 "to foster, promote and develop the welfare of working people, to improve their working conditions, and to enhance their opportunities for profitable employment."

DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

The Supreme Court comprises the Chief Justice of the United States and such number of Associate Justices as may be fixed by Congress. By the Act of June 25, 1948 (28 U. S. C. §1), Congress established the number of Associate Justices as eight. Power to nominate the Justices is vested in the President of the United States, and appointments are made with the advice and consent of the Senate. Article III, §1, of the Constitution further provides that "[t]he Judges, both of the supreme and inferior Courts, shall hold their Offices during good Behavior, and shall, at stated Times, receive for their Services, a Compensation, which shall not be diminished during their Continuance in Office."

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

In 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln founded the U.S. Department of Agriculture, he called it the "people's Department." In Lincoln's day, 90 percent of the people were farmers who were in need of good seed and information to grow their crops. Today, USDA continues Lincoln's legacy by serving all Americans, the two percent who farm as well as everyone who eats, wears clothes, lives in a house, or visits a rural area or a national forest.


DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE

The Department of Commerce promotes job creation, economic growth, sustainable development and improved living standards for all Americans by working in partnership with business, universities, communities and workers.

The Commerce Department touches the daily lives of Americans in many ways -- it makes possible the weather reports heard every morning; it facilitates technology that Americans use in the workplace and home every day; it supports the development, gathering and transmitting of information essential to competitive business; it makes possible the diversity of companies and goods found in America's (and the world's) marketplaces; it supports environmental and economic health for the communities in which Americans live and it conducts the constitutionally mandated decennial census which is the basis of representative democracy.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

The U.S. Department of Education was established on May 4, 1980 by Congress in the Department of Education Organization Act (Public Law 96-88 of October 1979). The Department's mission is to: Strengthen the Federal commitment to assuring access to equal educational opportunity for every individual; Supplement and complement the efforts of states, the local school systems and other instrumentalities of the states, the private sector, public and private nonprofit educational research institutions, community-based organizations, parents, and students to improve the quality of education; Encourage the increased involvement of the public, parents, and students in Federal education programs; Promote improvements in the quality and usefulness of education through Federally supported research, evaluation, and sharing of information; Improve the coordination of Federal education programs; Improve the management of Federal education activities; and Increase the accountability of Federal education programs to the President, the Congress, and the public.

THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves.
