ALKEK VELODROME
Located in the 10,534-acre Cullen Park (one of the largest municipal parks in the U.S.), the outdoor track cycling facility was built for the 1986 Olympic Festival. Its is one of 21 velodromes in the U.S.  The facility attracts track cycling athletes from all over the world.  Open year-round.

ALLEY THEATRE
Founded in 1947, the Tony Award winning Alley Theatre is a not-for-profit professional theater company presenting a diverse offering of new plays and music theater works.  The theater includes two stages, the Large stage and the Neuhaus Arena Stage, seating 824 and 296 respectively.

ARMAND BAYOU NATURE CENTER
This 2,500-acre wildlife preserve encompasses three ecosystems: estuarine wetlands, a bottom land hardwood forest and tall grass prairies.  The facilities include an interpretive building with an attached bird blind, more than five miles of trails, a prairie observation platform and a turn-of-the-century farm site.  Environmental education includes scheduled field trips, eco-camp and public demonstration and tours on weekends. BATTLESHIP TEXAS
The only surviving combat ship to have served in both World War I and II, theTexas has undergone extensive restoration.  The ship is berthed at San Jacinto Battleground State Park.

BAYOU BEND COLLECTION & GARDENS
Former estate of the late Houston philanthropist and collector, Ima Hogg, the collection includes more than 4,800 works including furniture, paintings, metals, ceramics, glass and textiles from the Colonial period to the mid-19th century and is displayed in 28 room settings.  Fourteen acres of formal and woodland gardens surround the home.  Reservations recommended.

BAYOU WILDLIFE PARK
The private wildlife reserve is home to more than 300 animals.  Visitors may take a tram tour and observe the animals as they roam freely in their natural habitats or visit the alligator, giraffe, rhinoceros and ostrich farms.  The park also allows picnicking on the grounds.  Open daily March-August, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.; September-Feburary, Tuesday-Sunday,

BEAR CREEK PARK
This beautiful country park is located on 2,168 acres.  Facilities include eight pavilions, 35 soccer fields, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, a wildlife section, War Memorial, equestrian trails, an aviary and much more.  Reservations must be made for the pavilions.  Located in the park is a golf course operated by the Bear Creek Golf World.

THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF HOUSTON
Hands-on participation and interaction with a wide variety of intriguing exhibits and educational activities encourage the inventor in every child.  Nine galleries are located in 12,000-square-foot exhibit hall, including "Farm to Market," where kids learn about where food comes from; "How Does It Work," a hands-on experimentation center; "Kids TV," where kids can pretend they are on television; "Yalalag," a replica of an actual village in Mexico; and lots more.  Open Tuesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday, Noon-5 p.m.

CONTEMPORARY ARTS MUSEUM

THE FORBIDDEN GARDENS
The Forbidden Gardens is an outdoor museum with complete replicas of the Forbidden City, Calming of the Heart and the tomb of Emperor Qin with terra-cotta soldiers. HERITAGE SOCIETY
Eight historic structures and a museum gallery are located here in 19-acre Sam Houston Park, the city's oldest park.  Each building, decorated with period furnishings, is essentially a museum.  Tours are offered through the buildings and landscaped grounds and gardens Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

HOUSTON ARBORETUM & NATURE CENTER
Founded 30 years ago, this 155-acre urban wildlife sanctuary offers five miles of trails, nature education programs and guided tours.  The Discovery Room features permanent interactive exhibits.  The Discovery Room and Nature Shop are open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Trails are open daily, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Free guided tours are given Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

HOUSTON FIRE MUSEUM
Located in the former 1899 Houston Fire Department Station #7, the museum features exhibits on the evolution of the fire fighting profession from the days of the bucket brigades to modern advanced fire fighting and life saving services.  A special feature of the museum is a collection of 19th-century fire fighting vehicles.

HOUSTON ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS

JONES HALL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
Sixty-six-foot ceilings, scarlet carpet, teak wood and travertine marble greet visitors to Jones Hall.  A uniquely designed movable ceiling enables the auditorium to literally shrink or expand from 1,800 to 3,000 seats.  Jones Hall is home to the Houston Symphony, the Society for the Performing Arts and the MasterCard Broadway series.

MINUTE MAID PARK
Minute Maid Park is the home of the Houston Astro, Major League Baseball team. It was opened in April 2000.  The ball park has a retractable roof for indoor and outdoor play.  The ball park is located in downtown Houston.

THE MENIL COLLECTION & CY TWOMBLY GALLERY
The Menil Collection opened in 1987 to preserve and exhibit the art collection of John and Dominique de Menil.  Approximately 15,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books are presented in the architecturally acclaimed Renzo Piano building.  In 1995, an exhibition annex housing a permanent installation of Cy Twombly's art was opened across the street from the Menil Collection.  The building contains more than 30 of Twombly's paintings, sculptures and works on paper.  Open Wednesday-Sunday,

MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON
Founded in 1900, this was the first art museum in Texas.  The collection features over 35,000 works including the Straus Collection of Renaissance and 18th-century works, the Beck Collection of Impressionist art and the Glassell Collection of African and Indonesian gold.  Also featured are the Cullen Sculpture Garden, the Hirsch Library and museum store.

MUSEUM OF PRINTING HISTORY
Special features of the museum include the only known extant copy of the colonization rules of Texas and engravings by a foremost German Renaissance designer.  The museum is a monument to the importance of printing in government, education, art and religion.

ORANGE SHOW

SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK
This is Texas' first Class One racing facility.  Enjoy top thoroughbred racing through April 5, then again October 22-December 27.  Summer Quarter Horse racing season is July 3-September 13.  Post times are Thursday-Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m.  Enjoy simulcast from across the country 364 days a year.

SAN JACINTO BATTLEGROUND & MONUMENT
General Sam Houston and his army defeated General Santa Anna and his Mexican troops here on April 21, 1836, winning Texas' independence from Mexico.  The 570-foot San Jacinto Monument was built to honor those Texas who fought in the battle.  The San Jacinto Museum of History exhibits Texas history from the end of the 19th century.  The museum also houses more than 100,000 objects, 250,000 documents, 10,000 visual images and a 35,000-volume rare book library.  The Jesse H. Jones Theatre, located on the ground floor of the monument, shows a 35-minute multi-image presentation of the battle.  Theater shows begin on the hour, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  The museum is open daily 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

SHELDON LAKE STATE PARK

The 2,500-acre wildlife area is situated on the Sheldon Reservoir.  The park contains two seasonal boat ramps, a fishing pier, primitive hiking trails and levees for viewing wildlife.  The park is home to a variety of bird species and alligators.  It is also the wintering home for hundreds of migratory waterfowl.  The Sheldon Lake Environmental Education Center offers fishing clinics, nature walks and wetlands studies on a prearranged basis.

SIX FLAGS ASTROWORLD
The facility has 75-acres of thrilling rides, including 11 roller coasters, the most in Texas.  Live shows, restaurants, games and attractions for the entire family.  Young thrill seekers can enjoy the Looney Toons Town, a colorful cartoon town come to life.  Six Flags Water World, a 15-acre water park adjacent to Six Flags AstroWorld, has slides, a free form lagoon, a 30,000 square foot wave pool, plus water activities for kids.  Six Flags AstroWorld's Southern Star Amphitheater attracts top musical performers each season.  Special festivals are held in October for Fright Fest.  Call for seasonal hours.

SPACE CENTER HOUSTON
Space Center Houston is the official visitors center and interactive museum of the NASA / Johnson Space Center.  Exhibits explore the past, present and future of manned space flight.  The complex also features films, an IMAX theater, computer simulations and guided tram tours through the astronaut training facilities at the Johnson Space Center.

TUNNELWALKS
Located 20 feet below the street, the six mile tunnel system is a series of passageways linking 56 buildings.  It features more than 100 restaurants as well as hotels, banks, shops and services.  The tunnel is free of charge and open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m., except major and bank holidays.  The tunnel begins at the Houston Visitors Information Center in City Hall.  Guided and self-guided TunnelWalk tours are available at the Visitors Center.

UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON

WEST BAY COMMON SCHOOL CHILDREN'S MUSEUM
Originally located in Chambers County, this little museum is one of the few "working" one room schoolhouses remaining in the state.  Built in 1898, it houses the Hands-On-History program for children of all ages throughout the area.
